In the Office of Recruitment we get many different questions from many different people. These questions can be very general, very specific, or even very personal. Typically the questions we receive come from students who are interested in applying to Marshall University or those who have been admitted to Marshall University but need a little help with their next steps.

Is Marshall University the Marshall University from the “We Are… Marshall” movie?

Yes… We Are! The film “We Are…Marshall” starring Matthew McConaghey and Matthew Fox is based on the events surrounding the plane crash that devastated our 1970 football team and the emotional process of grief and rebuilding that affected the football program, students, faculty and community. Several scenes from the film were shot on our beautiful campus and many of our students and alumni participated in filming as extras.

How big is Marshall?

Marshall University is considered a mid-size school. According to our 2008 student body data there were 13,584 students attending Marshall University (approximately 69% undergraduate students and 31% graduate students).


If I would like to visit Marshall University and take a tour, what should I do?

At the Gillette Welcome Center we provide daily presentations and tours for anyone interested in learning about the university. We provide tours Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) at 10 am and an additional tour at 1 pm on Fridays. What are your admission requirements?

I don’t have all the courses on the Recommended Course List. Can I still be admitted?

Yes. Not having the high school courses from the recommended course list will not necessarily prevent you from being admitted. However, if you are missing some courses, you will be required to complete comparable work in your first few semesters, which will be in addition to your graduation requirements.


If I would like to contact a coach at Marshall University, what should I do?

Marshall University offers 84 undergraduate majors and 120 areas of emphasis within these majors, so chances are pretty good that we have what you’re looking for. Is Marshall University safe?

It is always important to review a campus’s safety and security when searching for colleges. The Marshall University Police Department (MUPD) is an independent police department that is supported by 22 uniformed police officers patrolling campus 24 hours a day. I am interested in applying to Marshall University. What do I need to do?

Can I get the application fee waived?

If you have a financial hardship and want to request a waiver of the application fee, simply contact the Admissions Office at 1-800-642-3499. They will walk you through the waiver process.


What if I don’t meet the minimum acceptance requirements?

You may be eligible for conditional admission. Contact the Admissions Office for more information by calling 1-800-642-3499 or visiting http://www.marshall.edu/admissions/


When is the application deadline?

Marshall University has rolling admissions and will make admissions decisions up to two weeks before the start of classes. However, students are encouraged to apply and submit their enrollment deposit as early as possible.  Housing applications and Orientation invitations will be sent after the enrollment deposit is received, so early submission gives you the best chance to receive your first choice of Orientation dates and housing options.


Does Marshall University require an enrollment deposit?

Beginning Fall 2010 Marshall University will be instituting an enrollment deposit. More details will be available soon on the Office of the Bursar’s website at http://www.marshall.edu/bursar/.


Do you accept AP credit?

Yes, we do accept AP credit, and award varying amounts of credit based on your AP score.

Who can I call to verify Marshall University received my high school transcript, test scores, etc?

What is the student/faculty ratio?

At Marshall University we proudly offer a student/faculty ratio of 21 to 1.


What is the class average size at Marshall University?

The average size of a class at Marshall University is 23 students with 41% of our classes having fewer than 20 students. Our class average size is based on classes from a student’s freshman to senior year.


What is the H.E.L.P. program at Marshall University?

The Marshall University H.E.L.P. (Higher Education for Learning Problems) Program is dedicated to providing educational support, remediation, and mentoring to individuals diagnosed with a Learning Disability and/or ADHD. For more information please visit http://www.marshall.edu/help/.


I have heard that Marshall University has a unique program for students who have Asperger’s Syndrome. How can I learn more?

I am interested in majoring in Theatre Performance at Marshall University. Do I have to audition to be accepted into the program?

I heard Marshall University has a great nursing program that is very competitive. What do I need to do to get in?

Admission to Marshall University does not necessarily guarantee admission to a specific program. Can I get tutoring?

Yes. All full-time Marshall University students have access to free tutoring through the Tutoring Center (http://www.marshall.edu/uc/ts.shtm) and the Writing Center (http://www.marshall.edu/english/writingcenter/). Students are encouraged to utilize these resources early in the semester to get the greatest benefit.

What kind of scholarships can Marshall University offer me?

When should I apply for housing?

We recommend you apply for housing as soon as possible after being admitted to Marshall. This will increase your chances of being assigned to a room in the Freshman Year Residence Halls or getting the assignment you desire. Do I have to live in the Residence Halls?

Research shows that students who live on campus have a higher graduation rate than those who live off campus. Marshall wants to do what is best for our students and is committed to seeing them graduate. Therefore, we require that all freshman and sophomore students live in a residence hall. When will I find out who my roommate is?

After submitting your application and reservation fee to the Department of Residence Services, you will typically find out who your roommate will be in mid-June. For more information on housing and residence life, please visit http://www.marshall.edu/residence-services/.


How do I register for Orientation?

You can register on-line by visiting http://www.marshall.edu/orientation/ or calling 1-800-438-5392.


I am interested in being a part of Marshall’s Marching Thunder. Do I have to try out?

There are no tryouts for membership in the Marching Thunder for instrumentalists, but there are auditions for auxiliary groups (color guard, dance team, and majorettes) each spring. Also, auditions are required for new students who wish to apply for a partial tuition waiver through the marching band. Membership in the Marching Thunder is open to all university students, regardless of major.  Each band member receives a stipend for the hard work and service to the university.  Band members also earn one academic credit for each semester they are enrolled in band. Can I bring my car?

Yes! We offer all students the opportunity to purchase a parking permit and utilize our surface or garage parking. If you have further questions about parking (How much is it?
