Marshall
University is experiencing a significant increase in research
activity. Starting in 1990, our total grant and contract funding
has doubled every five years. While this rate of growth may be difficult to maintain, it does reflect growing university
emphasis and the breadth of resident expertise.
The benefits of our research are boundless. Research offers new learning
opportunities for our faculty and students and multiple services
to the greater community. For example, Marshall has research
projects in every county in West Virginia.
Marshall research
also creates jobs - technical, administrative and student
stipends. In 2004, our grants and contracts employed more
than
600 people, making the Marshall University Research Corporation
one of the top 10 employers in Huntington.
Marshall
research is playing an ever-increasing role in regional economic
development. When the university's
Technology Transfer
Office was created,
a number of researchers brought forth invention disclosures,
some with significant commercial potential. In today's
knowledge-based economy with an emphasis on intellectual capital and
research and development, more and more small businesses are
either growing out of
research universities or locating nearby to take advantage of
the talents and technologies available on campus. In a
complementary effort to create
new, high-paying jobs and add to the
diversification of our state's economy, the legislature
in 2008 created the
West Virginia Research Trust Fund.
The fund matches state dollars with private donations to
encourage university research and leverage private giving.
The research
goals of Marshall University are:
- Provide
solutions to regional and national educational, socioeconomic
and health problems
- Increase
the number of faculty and students engaged in research
- Increase
nationally competitive funding; and
- Strengthen
research support and administration.
