Resident Advisor
Resident Advisor for First Year Residence Halls
Resident Directors:
Resident Director (RD) positions are ten-month graduate assistantships assigned to Marshall's on-campus residential buildings. Each Resident Director, under the supervision of live-in professional hall staff, is responsible for the daily administration of a residence hall. Resident Directors supervise three to fourteen undergraduate Resident Advisors and clerical staff. Residential buildings vary in size from 120 to 500 residents.
Qualifications and Responsibilities
Desired qualifications include the completion of an undergraduate degree and acceptance into the Graduate School at Marshall University. Experience with live-in residential leadership or a similar activity is required. Resident Directors must maintain a 3.0 grade point average while in Graduate School. Successful candidates should show evidence of strong organizational, time-management, communication, leadership and decision-making skills. They must also relate well and deal effectively with a wide variety of students, administrators, faculty, parents and support staff.
We are looking for hardworking individuals who are dedicated to student affairs and are eager to learn. Our former Resident Directors have become successful in positions both in student affairs and in other fields, and value the skills, training and experience they acquired at Marshall. Resident Directors at Marshall University have the unique opportunity to, as graduate students, supervise staff and oversee day-to-day operations in an entire residence hall. Few programs offer this degree of responsibility to graduate students. The work is challenging and immensely rewarding.
Compensation
Resident Directors receive an annual base stipend of $9,500 paid twice monthly for 10 months, a full graduate tuition waiver (not including activity fees), a furnished apartment and board plan (when the residential cafeterias are in operation). The financial equivalent of this package is approximately $17,000-$19,000. Other compensation includes the opportunity to gain experience in residential management and student development, and enhanced leadership skills.
