Ten Great Reasons to Live On Campus at Marshall University
Living on campus while attending college has many advantages. Because of the university's commitment to ensuring the academic success of all its students, Marshall requires freshmen and sophomores who live outside the 50-mile commuting range to live in campus residence halls. Freshmen and sophomores who live within the commuting range may be exempted from this requirement, but only to live at home with their parents or legal guardian. The advantages of campus living are not only for students outside the commuting range; many students from Huntington and the surrounding area choose to live on campus so that they can enjoy the advantages of campus living.
We are...Marshall. We are
...Safe: Marshall University makes the safety of its residents a top priority. Our front desks are staffed 24-hours a day to monitor access to the building. A staff of security guards also patrols the halls at night to ensure compliance with rules and to address any security concerns.
...Successful: Research has shown that students who live on campus are more likely to achieve academic success and graduate from college. They have campus resources like the library, computer labs, and tutoring services readily available, only a short walk from their residence hall.
...Convenient: Campus residents do not have to worry about finding a parking space when they are running late, and can even roll out of bed fifteen minutes before their 8:00 a.m. class and still be on time. It is also easy for campus residents to enjoy all the extracurricular, cultural, and athletic activities Marshall offers; since they are already on campus, it is easier for them to find time to get involved in college life outside the classroom.
...Fostering Independence: Living on campus is a great transition between living at home where family can take care of your daily needs and being completely on your own in a residence hall. Residents are free to make their own decisions and plans, but still always have staff to turn to if they have a question or problem.
...Supportive: While campus residents are independent, they have a trained residence hall staff available to them 24-hours a day. Marshall University Department of Residence Services employs a staff of Resident Advisors, Resident Directors, and Residence Life professionals to handle any problems that arise. Resident Advisors are student employees who live on the floor with the residents. They are trained to answer questions about Marshall and college life, to be a friend to the residents, and to refer students to where they can obtain help with more serious problems.
...Fun: Another role of the residence hall staff is to make living in the residence halls an enjoyable experience for the residents. They do this by planning a variety of social, educational, and recreational activities for the residents. Examples of past activities include massage therapy, ping-pong tournaments, a local mechanic teaching residents how to maintain their vehicles, and discussions of current events facilitated by favorite professors.
...A Value: The cost of campus housing includes not only your room and all basic utilities, but also many extra perks, including basic cable television, 24-hour on-call maintenance, free newspapers. Your campus meal plan not only allows you to eat in any of the campus dining halls, it also allows you to enjoy late night snacks four nights a week.
...Building Friendships: Many former residents say the best friendships they have formed in their lives were with people they met while living in a residence hall. Living on-campus will bring you into contact with people you would never have met if you only came to campus to attend class. You will also have the opportunity to make friends with university staff and faculty at programs, which can be an asset as you apply for jobs or graduate school.
...Offering Options: Marshall University recognizes that its resident students have a variety of needs and interests, and we aim to offer a variety of options to accommodate them. We offer single, double, and suite-style housing. Students can be placed on a quiet-study floor. Students who wish to live in an environment where students agree to refrain from drinking or using drugs outside of the residence hall as well as within it (all Marshall's residence halls are substance-free) may request to live on a Substance Abuse Free Environment floor.
Marshall also now offers living-learning communities. Living-learning communities group students who share a common academic interest together on one floor of a residence hall. Students who enroll in the College of Science, College of Health Professions, or College of Fine Arts will have the option of participation in living-learning communities. In addition, any student with an interest in international affairs, cultures, or foreign language, regardless of major, may choose to live in the International living-learning community. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are studying business, human services, education, or foreign language.
...Providing a Complete College Experience: All of these advantages to living on campus add up to a complete college experience for campus residents. Campus residents usually feel a stronger sense of connection to the campus community. Because they are living in the center of all the action that makes the Marshall community so vibrant, they are best able to fully enjoy the out-of-classroom experiences that make being in college so enriching and fun.
