Residence Hall Programming

Conducting edible science projects. Taking jujitsu lessons. Enjoying a free massage. Performing in an "American Idol" style talent contest. Playing African-American trivia. Learning how to maintain a car properly. Receiving advice from experts on how to apply to graduate school.

Not all of these are the kinds of experiences that students and parents typically associate with a college education, but they are all activities students in Marshall's residence halls have enjoyed when they participate in hall programs. Programs are social, recreational, or educational activities provided exclusively to students who live in the residence halls. Each hall staff plans programs that their residents will benefit from and enjoy.

The programs have several purposes. First, they provide opportunities for residents in a building or floor to get to know one another and feel part of a residential community. Programs also provide students the opportunity to get to know a variety of other people associated with the Marshall and Huntington communities. Professors, staff, and other local professionals and experts often volunteer their time to facilitate programs, which allow students the opportunity to interact with people they might otherwise only know in a limited context. Programs are designed to be educational, and will expose residents to activities and information they may not otherwise encounter, helping them to grow personally and discover new interests. And finally, programs are fun. They often include a hands-on activity for participants to enjoy.

We encourage students, and even parents, to participate in the programs offered in our residence halls. Programs usually take place where residents live-right in their own building or even on their own floor. And, as if there were not enough reasons for students to participate in programs already, many programs offer complimentary snacks or pizza to their participants!

The Department of Residence Services staff is always looking for innovative programming ideas. If your student has an idea for a program, please let the floor Resident Advisor or building Resident Director know, or email us.
