Campus Security
Students who live in the residence halls can take comfort in knowing that the Department of Residence Services takes the safety of its residents very seriously. The following measures are in place to ensure a safe residential living environment:- The front desks of Marshall's residence hall are staffed 24 hours a day. All residents must show their room keys, which are coded by building, at the front desk before proceeding upstairs. All guests must show a photo ID and be signed in as a guest by their host at the front desk. This limits access to the building to its residents and to their properly registered guests.
- Residence Services employs staff, called Residence Hall Monitors, who patrol the halls from 12:00 a.m. each night until 8:00 a.m. in the morning. They ensure the buildings are secure and the rules are being complied with. They also serve as an extra set of eyes and ears on the floors during the hours when most students are asleep.
- The Residence Hall staff of Resident Directors and Resident Advisors also make periodic nightly rounds of each hall. There is always a Resident Advisor and Resident Director on call to handle any situation that may arise in the halls.
- The Marshall University Police Department is located only steps away from the residence halls. Call (304) 696-HELP (or 4357).
Residents themselves also bear responsibility for their own safety. It is important that they take responsibility for keeping their room doors locked, for reporting anything unusual or suspicious to a member of the residence hall staff or Marshall University Police, for taking their valuables home with them over breaks, and for knowing the character and trustworthiness of any guests they sign in to their rooms.
