MINUTES OF THE FACULTY EVALUATION AND COMPENSATION

AD HOC COMMITTEE

MEETING DATE:  JANUARY 17, 2003

ORDER OF BUSINESS:

The committee heard a discussion regarding faculty salaries as discussed previously in a December 2, 2002 memorandum. This memorandum contained three charts that compared the Marshall salaries by colleges to colleges in its peer institution’s list. It was stated that chart number one most closely matches Senate Bill 547. However, it was stated that the most appropriate chart to use for comparison would be chart number two. This is because chart two includes faculty rank. There was an explanation of the comparison between Marshall salaries and market value salaries. Also discussed, was why the College of Business salaries appear to be at a higher level of market value. Also discussed was the subject of instructor rank.  Peer institutions tend to have about 10% of their faculty at the instructor rank. Marshall, on the other hand, has very few faculty at the instructors rank.

There was a discussion on the use of Arreola’s professional type student evaluation forms versus the current student evaluation form. The currently used form is by far cheaper.

There followed a discussion of Arreola’s presentation.  Included in this discussion were issues of:

It was stated that the WV HEPC’s commission regarding faculty evaluation and compensation, leaves wide open the opportunity for the Marshall committee to design its own protocol.
