FACULTY EVUALATION & COMPENSATION AD HOC COMMITTEE
Minutes of the meeting held Friday March 26, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in the John Spotts Room of the Memorial Student Center.
Present: (Sheet not returned) Jim Sottile, Kay Wildman, Elaine Baker, Don Van Horn, Michael McGuffey, Sandra Marra, Janet Dooley, Shirley Lumpkin, Barbara O’Byrne, Michael Castellani
The FECC deeply regrets the untimely passing of John Singley. We appreciate his contributions to the committee as secretary and participant, just one small part of his dedicated service to Marshall University. We will miss him.
Janet Dooley reported on her presentation to the Faculty Senate and some discussion of
responses ensued.
Shirley Lumpkin was drafted as secretary, the result of an eyeball conspiracy between Jim Sottile and Janet Dooley. Having no other alternative, the committee agreed.
The Faculty Senate, after discussion, indicated a clear preference for merit monies distribution at College Level rather than University Level.
The FECC, having taken the advice of Senate into consideration, voted to recommend a college-wide distribution system for merit, as per the previous motion.
A Discussion ensued about the interaction of merit and equity, the market equity formula,
and the question of whether colleges needed to be told how to use the merit monies distributed to them.
The Committee discussed some principles upon which the decisions about merit pay were made. The Committee agreed to return to this discussion at the next meeting.
A brief discussion of the student rating forms resulted in the decision that the trial student rating forms will be run for another semester, using the same volunteer faculty members.
The Committee agreed that any system recommended and adopted would need to include a trial run of the system, monitoring, and periodic review.
The Committee discussed phase-in of the merit system and decided to delay this decision.
It was agreed that the template will be addressed at the next meeting.
The next meetings are at 12:30 p.m. April 2 in MSC 2E10.
11:30 p.m. April 16, John Spotts Room.
12:30 p.m., April 30, MSC 2E10.
