Marshall University Welcomes the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1 Championships
Greetings Soccer Players, Parents and Fans! Welcome to Marshall University and our Joan C. Edwards Stadium. Marshall University is proud to host the Opening Ceremonies for the U.S. Youth Soccer Region One Tournament. Whether you are here this week to play or cheer, I encourage you to take a few moments to explore our remarkable campus. As you stroll around campus, discover a rich blend of history and modern development as denoted by the statue of our namesake, the great Chief Justice John Marshall, as well as the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology and Science Center, the Memorial Fountain, our state-of-the-art Student Recreation Center, and our beautiful new Foundation Hall. A Campus Map is available at www.marshall.edu/campus/campusmap.pdf or pick up one at our Office of Recruitment located at the corner of Hal Greer Boulevard and 5th Avenue. We are a University that prides itself in being big enough to matter and small enough to care. You might wonder whether you can pursue medical education and earn a medical degree (M.D.) at Marshall. (Yes, you can.) Maybe you want to become an engineer. (Be sure to take a look at our new Arthur Weisberg Family Engineering Laboratories building.) You also might wonder if we have a Division I Intercollegiate Soccer program. (Yes, we certainly do.) You might be considering a career in forensic science (Marshall has the #1 ranked program in the country) or perhaps you have a knack for the arts or literature. Regardless of your interest, we’re sure Marshall offers programs that will capture your interest. Our Recruitment staff can answer all of your questions about our numerous programs of study. These folks can also provide you with additional information about the vast array of opportunities available for students at Marshall. (Check out www.marshall.edu/recruitment.) The time will come for you to choose your destination for pursuing your college education. Consider the wonderful experiences you have had participating in extracurricular activities such as soccer. After you have made your college choice, commit to following your passions as you select an area of study and remember to take advantage of opportunities to get involved. Extracurricular experiences – such as soccer – are a vital and memorable part of your college education. For the young athletes who take the field this week, know that you are part of something very special. While you are here, I hope you witness many exciting plays on the field and experience many thunderous cheers from the stands. Congratulations and best of luck to all players, coaches, and fans throughout the tournament! Sincerely,
Dr. Stephen J. Kopp
