STUDENT GROUPs - Honors Societies & CLUBS

Lambda Alpha is the National Collegiate Honors Society for Anthropology. The Beta Chapter of West Virginia, formed in 1995, is housed in our department. Membership confers certain privileges, including national academic recognition, scholarships, and the opportunity to publish in a national anthropological journal.

AKD is the International Sociology Honor Society. The Alpha Chapter at Marshall University was established in 1950 and was the first one in the state. Conferring a charter signifies that the institution meets high standards of program quality and scholarship. While the focus is on scholarship, we also emphasize fellowship for faculty and students, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

STUDENT AWARDS
The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers a number of merit-based scholarships. Please see the Student Awards page for more information on these scholarships as well as lists of the recent awardees.
Tales from the field
An initiative of students in the Department studying overseas and/or conducting research in other parts of the country or world. Tales from the Field provides a forum for students to share their experiences, perhaps in experimental ways, through ongoing narrative pieces that take the reader into a particular (and sometimes peculiar) social and cultural worlds they encounter while "in the field." They are intended to convey the lived experience of the places and people encountered through a variety of depictive techniques and textual devices, highlighting the application of theory and methods in our disciplines of anthropology and sociology (even if in informal ways). These are voluntary entries from our students organized by academic year of study.. Think of them as "post cards" home from abroad ... or a least from further afield. Celebrate their discoveries!
