PAST STUDY Abroad PROGRAM

The Post-Industrial City
This program, conducted in 2010, had the theme of postindustrial
cities with a focus on Huntington, West Virginia and Malmö, Sweden. Both are cities historically
shaped by strong industries and both have gone and are going through difficult
processes of re-identifying themselves as the industries left or are leaving.
The Malmö connection:
Malmö is located on the shores of “Öresund” just across from the Danish
capital, Copenhagen. This course at Marshall ran parallel with an identical
course at Malmö University. The students from Marshall went to Malmö for two weeks (including
the week before spring break and spring break; during the stay in Malmö,
students were housed with Swedish students and faculty). In the two following
weeks, the students from Malmö came to Huntington (and lived on Marshall’s
campus). During these four weeks, there were lectures, visits to museums,
archives, businesses, organizations.

About Malmö University
Malmö University was founded in 1998 and is today Sweden’s ninth largest university of undergraduate studies. Located in the centre of Malmö at Universitetsholmen, the university has played a central role in the transformation of Malmö from industrial town to centre of learning.
Malmö University strives to be a university open to all; a university that is structured to cope with our ever-changing jobs market through a multi-disciplinary approach that crosses traditional school and faculty boundaries. This is also one of the reasons we make an effort to attract students that come from a background where university education has not necessarily been part of their tradition. Malmö University has five school and faculty areas, all of which are multi-disciplinary. This means that several sciences meet under one roof, each one enriching the other. It also means that our courses and programs give graduates a wider outlook as they prepare for their imminent professional working careers.
