Information on recruiting a SOJMC intern

Are you looking for a journalism or mass communications intern?  SOJMC interns can help write, design, and produce communications content for your web, social media, podcast, radio, television, print, and video needs. Students in the SOJMC are trained in communications strategies for advertising, public relations, marketing communications, marketing promotions, fundraising, news reporting, sports reporting, news editing, news production, photography, audio announcing, broadcast station management, multimedia editing, scriptwriting, and video production. Here are two ways to recruit a SOJMC intern for your company or organization:

1. Announce your internship opportunity –  To recruit SOJMC interns, the SOJMC recommends using Marshall University’s Career Education recruitment partner Handshake. You can create an account and post an announcement at:

Job Postings/Handshake

2. Contact the SOJMC Internship Coordinator – The School of Journalism and Mass Communications Internship Coordinator can connect you with the SOJMC faculty, post your announcement on this website and help you recruit a SOJMC intern. Here is how to contact the SOJMC Internship Coordinator:

SOJMC internship requirements

The SOJMC requires all majors to complete 300 hours of internship work to graduate. The 300 hours of work is equal to 3 academic credit hours. SOJMC students are responsible for finding their own internships, but the SOJMC Internship Coordinator can help you to find an intern that fits your needs. For an internship to count for academic credit in the Marshall University School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the work must be related to the mass distribution of communications content. There are three internship course requirements for employers:

  1. Complete a midterm digital report form. This form will be sent to you by email from the internship coordinator.
  2. Work with the student to plan a midterm meeting to review the student’s and employer’s midterm reports. This will take about 15-30 minutes and can be done virtual, face-to-face, or over the phone.
  3. Complete a final digital report. This report is worth 50% of your intern’s final grade.
