SOJMC PROFESSOR PUBLISHES CHAPTER
IN BOOK

Professor Rabe has recently published a chapter in a new book on the American press of the Civil War era. The chapter examines newspaper stories and editorials published as the nation celebrated its 100th birthday just a few years after the end of a bloody civil war.  It argues that many sectional and partisan divisions remained in place in 1876, but that the overwhelming sentiment, especially in Northern papers, was to urge Americans to put the war behind them and focus instead on their common heritage and shared values.  The chapter is titled “Race, Reconciliation, and Historical Memory in American Newspapers During the Centennial Year” and appears in the book Words at War: The Civil War and American Journalism (Purdue University Press, 2008), edited by David B. Sachsman, S. Kittrell Rushing, and Roy Morris Jr.
