Birke Fine Arts Festival: Dead Man's Cell Phone

Dead Man’s Cell Phone: A Play by Sarah Ruhl
Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center, Experimental Theatre
Note: there is a charge for this event. Call 696-ARTS for tickets.

About the Play:
An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet café. A stranger at the next table who has had enough. And a dead man — with a lot of loose ends. So begins Dead Man’s Cell Phone, a wildly imaginative new comedy by Pulitzer Prize finalist, Sarah Ruhl. A work about how we memorialize the dead — and how that remembering changes us — it is the odyssey of a woman forced to confront her own assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world. There is a charge for this event. To purchase tickets call 304-696-ARTS.

An Evening of Cabaret with Roslyn Kind - (JCE Playhouse)

This event takes place in the Joan C. Edwards Playhouse.

The sister of the legendary Barbra Streisand, Roslyn Kind will dazzle audiences with her vocal prowess when she presents an evening of music, cabaret and family story telling that is sure to entertain. Kind is fresh off the European leg of Streisand’s World Tour where she and nephew Jason Gould were the special guest artists. The July 4th, 2013 concert date was one of the top 5 concerts in the world.

Nine years younger than her mega-famous sibling, she has built a considerable name for herself as a singer, performing on Broadway and around the world. Kind has headlined prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, The Greek Theater and London’s Café Royal along with long awaited and rapturously received Carnegie Hall debut with her frequent musical collaborator and friend, Michael Feinstein.

Kind began her performing career while still in her teens with her debut album, Give Me You. Her follow up album, This is Roslyn Kind, showcased her growth as a recording artist. Kind has made multiple appearances in films and in television programs such as “The Nanny” and “Gimme a Break.”

The Taming of the Shrew
By William Shakespeare
April 23-26 at 7:30 PM
Joan C. Edwards Playhouse

A tale of two sisters; sweet-tempered daddy’s girl Bianca can have her pick of suitors—but not until her sister, the acid-tongued Kate, can be married off. Rising to the challenge is Petruchio; an unconventional, guy of good humour and strong will, but can he match Kate jab for jab? This is Shakespeare’s masterpiece of the battle of the sexes–a surprising love story that dares to ask what roles we play . . . and, underneath, who we really are.
