Mr. Farris Hamed was born 1/15/ 1885 and died 5/7/ 1982 at the age of 97. According to the family history published in The History of Pocahontas County, Farris came to the area from Hammana, Syria to join his older brother in Marlington in 1906. Together or alone they operated various stores in Marlington, Cass, Arbovale, and Green Bank.

As I recall, after more than twenty-five years Mr. Hamed, was reluctant to talk about himself. I sensed a certain modesty and humbleness. There was no question in my mind that he had been successful and had reared a wonderful family of which he seemed to be very proud. Again according to the above reference his family were farmers in their native land and after much business success he return to farming, first in Gallipolis, Ohio in 1919 before returning to Green Bank area in 1920.
