                          Gallipolis, O. June 16th 1878

     J. P. Aleshire
I have just given A. Vance
a letter of introduction to Detective Mc
Devett Washing[ton]. Luther and his father started
this noon via Hamden to Washing[ton] for
the purpose of disproving the slanderous
report about the jewelry. this theft will be
fixed on Luther. I have written McDevett
and Sam Smithers to day and will wire them
tomorrow to watch every move Vance makes
Now about the Emerald or diamond ring. Mary
says a diamond was lost or broken out. you took
took the ring to Cinc and had new one
put in. Which she says is a little low or
flatter than balance, which you can examine
and get all the evidence you can. all here say the ring
part is new. balance all old except the center
diamond. which I had put in a letter 13th inst
from Sam Smithers says the plain ring was sent to New
York and melted over and made entirely new
have both rings carefully examined. I will
send them toDukmers where you will call for them
