A NOTE TO THE LISTENER: All of the musical selections in this online exhibit (with the exception of “Poor Ellen Smith” by Molly O’Day) were recorded on audio tape, either in the homes of the musicians or at music festivals in West Virginia and Kentucky. Initially, our goal was to document the life stories of these women. The fidelity of the music was secondary. Therefore, these audio recordings are not studio quality. We used a Marantz tape recorder, considered the standard in the field of oral history. This recorder is capable of capturing almost all atmospheric noises, so if you hear the sound of big rigs running down the road or a camera clicking in the background, please consider these extraneous elements as part of the total contextual experience.
