SAUNDERS

Just below the impoundment dams of the Buffalo Creek Coal Company sat Saunders. It was first known as Three Forks, because of the confluence of the Three Forks Branch with Buffalo Creek (See: Map of Logan County, State Road Commission of West Virginia, [1935], Map 23).

The village was completely destroyed in the Buffalo Creek Flood, and there were eighteen fatalities in Saunders:

       Janice Bailey, 32 years - Mother
       Jason Bailey, Jr., 11 years - Son
       Rhoda Rene Bailey, 8 years Daughter
       Kimberly K. Bailey, 6 years - Daughter
       Carla J. Bailey, 18 months years - Daughter

       Albert O. Hedinger, 34 years - (Preparation Engineer, Buffalo Mining Company tipple)

       Norman Lester, 24 years - Husband (Miner)
       Sharon Ann Lester, 25 years - Wife
       Dennatta Lester, 5 to 7 years
       Denise Lester, 3 years - Daughter

       Opal Lester, 45 years - Mother of Shaon Ann Lester
       Barry K. Lester, 15 years - Son
       Rita J. Lester, 16 years - Daughter

       Della Trent, 69 years - Mother
       Henry Trent, 49 years - Son (Shuttle car operator, Buffalo Mining Company)
       Wanda Trent, 39 years - Daughter
       Johnny Trent, 32 years - Daughter
       Gene Trent, 26 years - Son (Trucker driver, Buffalo Mining Company)
