Stuart Collection cabinetTHE JESSE STUART COLLECTION, when acquired in 1975 from International Bookfinders, Inc., included copies of all the author’s first-editions published up to that year. After receiving the collection, the Special Collections staff kept the collection up-to-date by purchasing copies of all succeeding first editions as they were published. A specially built bookcase was prepared to house the books in the Special Collections reading room.

On November 18, 1975, in commemoration of acquiring the collection, Marshall University honored the author with a “Jesse Stuart Day” on campus. Jesse Stuart visited the campus, was honored with a convocation, in which he talked, was given a special luncheon with invited quests, and met with faculty and student groups. He had an enjoyable time, even signing autographs for his fans.  A number of the books in the initial acquisition contained inscriptions by him, and he took the time to inscribe all the books in the collection that were previously not autographed.

As a result of that occasion Jesse Stuart graciously allowed members of the Special Collections staff to come to his home in W-Hollow and take one copy of all his other published writings, which were stored in a small, well-kept out-building behind his home that he had also used as a studio for writing. These materials consisted of primarily articles, short stories and poetry from the authorís own collection of magazines. If he had only a single copy, he permitted the staff to take that copy with them, make a photocopy at the University, and return the original to him. His generosity meant that Marshall University Libraries has one of the most complete, if not the most complete, collections of all Jesse Stuart’s published works in their original published form. The complete collection occupies 12 linear feet of shelf space.

Over the years other others have added to the collection, making it one of the finest collections of Stuartiana anywhere in the United States.
