The Marshall University Graduate Studies in Athletic Administration
Graduate Studies Program in Athletic Administration is nationally recognized for providing quality post-graduate education. As part of the Division of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER), the program offers a flexible course of study to meet the individual needs of each student. The program fosters an array of academic skills, focusing on career outcomes. Additionally, theory and practical application are combined to produce well-rounded, capable graduates. HPER is comprised of 16 full time and 10 adjunct faculty members. HPER provides the students discretion in personalizing their graduate work to meet their individual career goals. Our students come from a variety of undergraduate backgrounds, adding to the diversity of the educational experience.
HPER Masters Requirements
Students are required to take 36 hours of graduate course work in order to earn the Master of Science Degree. Thesis and non-thesis options are available. Students are required to take six hours of classes in Research and three hours of Exercise Physiology. Additionally, six hours of graduate courses are required outside of HPER. These usually include courses in education, management, communications, or public relations. Fifteen hours are taken as electives within HPER and a six-hour internship is required.
Internships and Career Opportunities
Internships are available in a wide variety of athletic endeavors. Students have interned with professional athletic teams, university athletic departments, and a variety of media and marketing/public relations outlets, to list a few. Graduates from the HPER program have gone on to careers in areas such as sports information, marketing/public relations positions, ticketing, management, athletic operations, compliance, and coaching.
Admission
Marshall University accepts a wide variety of students. Any student with a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university may be admitted to the graduate school provided he or she possesses at least a 2.5 grade point average and has taken the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). A number of graduate courses, however, do require undergraduate prerequisites. Full admittance into the HPER Masters program requires a 3.0 grade point average in 18 hours of graduate work.
Graduate Assistantships
A large number of graduate assistantships are available on a competitive basis. Assistantships require part-time employment in a division. Duties are usually divided among teaching, assisting in activity classes, recreational sports duties, and administrative tasks.
