Faculty Resources: MU Service Learning Program Office

For faculty, maintaining successful partnerships with community agencies and monitoring your students during their service hours can be time consuming. To facilitate some of these logistical tasks, MUSLP offers community liaison services to faculty. You may request 1) weekly/monthly calls to verify student participation and excellence, 2) site visits and research in order to locate potential community partners, or 3) delivery of partnership documents, among other things. Ensure the long-term viability of your partnerships and stay on top of student progress by requesting community liaison services.

Subscribe to the MU Service Learning Listserve for updates on all campus-wide faculty workshops, information about national service learning conferences, and deadlines for faculty development and course designation applications. Faculty also use the listserve to discuss issues related to SL pedagogy: what works, what doesn't, how to negotiate the mechanics of partnerships with the community, etc.

MUSLP is building a Program Library to support faculty who are developing service-learning courses. The Program Office has, among other things, a series of books published by the American Association for Higher Education on service learning in different disciplines. Click to see a list of current titles available for faculty to check out. Requested books will be delivered to faculty, or faculty may wish to visit the MUSLP office to browse the shelves.

Need more information?  Have any questions? Faculty interested in developing an "SL" designation for a course may wish to arrange a one-on-one consultation with the program director, Dr. Kimberly DeTardo-Bora, to discuss any number of questions related to identifying potential community partners, integrating reflection activities, developing service projects relevant to the discipline, etc.
