As a student at Marshall, you’re not alone on your academic journey. We understand that college life can be both exciting and challenging, and we’re here to provide the support you need to succeed. Whether you’re struggling with coursework, feeling homesick or just need someone to talk to, our resources are designed to assist you every step of the way.

What is Student Support Services (SSS)?

Student Support Services is a federally funded TRiO grant program. You may have heard of other TRiO programs like Upward Bound and Talent Search. TRIO programs help support low-income and first-generation college students overcome barriers to higher education, including class, social, academic and cultural challenges.

Student Support Services is located in Prichard Hall on Marshall University’s Huntington campus.

Our Services

Each year there are numerous activities and programs for SSS participants to enjoy. All activities and programs are provided free of charge to SSS participants. Additionally, SSS participants benefit from the following services and opportunities:

  • Academic advising: Formal and informal assistance to select and register for courses
  • Financial Aid Assistance: Applying for, understanding and maximizing financial aid packages
  • Computer Lab: Two in-office computer labs
  • Free Printing: Unlimited free academic printing (SSS participants only)
  • Personal One-on-One Support: Trained Student Support Service and TRiO professionals will assist you throughout your entire undergraduate career working to ensure your success
  • Educational Programs: Programs hosted for students to gain knowledge about topics such as: college majors, interview skills, healthy relationships, etc.
  • Social Programs: Programs hosted for students in various locations for socializing such as: game nights, movie nights, ornament decorating, etc.
  • Study Skills Course: Time management, mid-term and final exam preparation, stress reduction, test taking, note taking, learning styles
  • Summer Build-Up Program: Pell Grant eligible Freshman and Sophomore students
  • Supplemental Instruction: An academic support program targeting difficult courses and offers regularly scheduled review sessions. For additional information, visit info.umkc.edu/si.
  • UNI 101: Freshman orientation to help you acclimate to campus, get to know your SSS counselor and other SSS participants
  • Postgraduate Assistance: Help with financial aid, provide fees and study material for entrance exams for postgraduate studies
Program Eligibility

What are the eligibility requirements to be a part of SSS?

Student Support Services is a federally funded program designed to serve undergraduate college students who meet at least one of the three eligibility requirements shown below:

  • First-Generation College Student – Parent(s)/Guardian(s) did not graduate with a 4-year degree;
  • Meet Federal Income eligibility requirements; and/or,
  • Have a documented learning or physical disability (the student must have or will need to be registered with Marshall University Offices of Disability Services).

Additionally, students must

  • Be enrolled full-time at Marshall University at the beginning of their participation with Student Support Services; and,
  • Agree to the conditions of program participation as outlined in the Student Application.

Student Support Services encourages all eligible students to apply for the program as early as possible as only 200 students can be served.

SSS Application

How do I become a part of Marshall University’s SSS Program?

Apply by clicking here. Each year, Marshall University’s SSS staff, with the help of the Office of Financial Aid, identifies admitted students who meet SSS program requirements. These students then complete an application for our program. SSS serves 200 Marshall students (freshman to seniors) each year by providing them with academic, social and cultural support throughout college. This is a voluntary support service; thus, only by returning a completed application in a timely fashion do you have the opportunity to secure a place in the Marshall SSS program.
