Greek Terminology

Active:  a member who has completed the new member period and has been formally initiated into the chapter

Bid:  a formal, written invitation to join a sorority or fraternity

Chapter:  local group of a larger national organization designated by a special Greek letter name.  (ex.--the Theta Omicron chapter of Alpha Tau Omega)

Hazing:  unethical, unlawful, and forbidden activities which do not enhance sisterhood or brotherhood or uphold the founding ideals of Greek organizations

New Member:  one who has accepted a bid and has been formally pledged but has not been initiated

Philanthropy:  an organization which each fraternity or sorority sponsors and assists on a national level

Potential Member:  anyone currently enrolled at Marshall University and is registered for recruitment
