STUDENT LEGAL AID PURPOSE

The Program Advisor for Student Legal Aid is a neutral complaint handler who attempts to assure that all students are treated fairly and equitably within all areas of the University. This includes assisting students in understanding the various policies and procedures within the University such as academic appeals (grade appeals, dismissals, etc.), judicial board appeals, grievances, mediation, and other areas. Although having no formal decision-making authority, the Program Advisor has wide powers of inquiry. Additionally, the Program Advisor will refer matters to the proper person or office, and when appropriate, assist in negotiations, or other aspects of problem solving.

The Program Advisor will listen, advise, suggest options, make recommendations, and investigate informally with the goal being conflict resolution.

HOW OUR OFFICE HELPS

If a student is uncertain whether or not there is a specific policy or procedure to handle his/her situation, the Office of Student Legal Aid will provide advice, information and referral. All discussions are strictly confidential.

In such cases such as grade appeals, a channel of appeal has been set forth in the Marshall University Student Handbook. The Program Advisor can assist in explaining options, and when necessary, guide students through the appeal process.

Seminars are offered each semester on topics of interest to students. Valuable and informative brochures such as Credit Card Awareness, a Student Guide to Renting , and How to Use the Magistrate Court of West Virginia are available in the office.
