Marshall University Composting Facility

The First Commercial Compost Facility in WV

The development of the composting project started as an idea to reduce waste haul and produce soil amendment for use on campus in 2018. The project grew over time, with the first donation coming from community member Tom Wolf in December 2018. The project received several grants from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) and the Appalachian Stewardship Foundation, as well as a donation from Leslie Petties. In January 2020, the project purchased its first piece of equipment. Despite nearly two years of pandemic-related challenges, the facility was completed in late 2022, and the project began producing compost in January 2023.
