What is the Math Workshop? The Math Workshop is a collaboration between University College and the Math Department, designed to prepare students to take college level math. Successful completion of the Math Workshop will allow students to eliminate the need to take remedial math class(es), and move directly into a 100-level college math course that may be used to fulfill graduation requirements. Is MTH 127, "College Algebra," a part of the Math Workshop? No. MTH 127 is a regular college-level class and not a part of the Math Workshop. The Math Workshop is meant to fulfill the remedial prerequisite for MTH 127. Participants will be charged the applicable tuition rate for MTH 127 and will be required to purchase the textbook for that course. Participants will earn four semester hours towards graduation upon successful completion of MTH 127. If I register for the Math Workshop, am I 6:48 PM 6/24/2008 automatically registered for MTH 127?Students who register for the Math Workshop are NOT automatically registered for MTH 127. Please contact the University College Advising Center to register for the special section of MTH 127. Does the Math Workshop satisfy the math requirement for my major? No. Most majors on campus require either MTH 121, MTH 123, or MTH 127 (see your advisor for information on which course is required by your major) as the minimum required college-level math course. Successful completion of the Math Workshop satisfies any remedial prerequisites you may have to complete before taking one of these courses. It does not replace any of the courses. Who is eligible for the Workshop?Any student whose Math test scores are below 19 on the ACT or 460 on the SAT, which places him/her into a remedial math course, is eligible for the Math Workshop. Students who have attempted a remedial math course and received a grade of “No Credit” are also eligible. The Math Workshop/MTH 127 combination option is only open to students with an ACT math score of 16 or greater or an SAT quantitative score of 380 or greater. How is the Math Workshop taught?During the first hour of instruction each day, the Math Workshop is led by an instructor who is approved by the Math Department. All students are given the same instruction. Due to the short time frame that the Math Workshop is offered, attendance is mandatory. During the second hour each day, students will break out into mandatory small-group tutoring sessions. The tutors will reinforce the concepts that the students learned during the first hour of instruction. Attendance is also mandatory for the tutoring sessions. How much does the Math Workshop cost? The fee for the Math Workshop is $185 per student. This will include instruction, tutoring, and the textbook for the course. This fee does not include any costs related to MTH 127. When is the Workshop offered?According to student demand, the Math Workshop will be offered every fall and spring semester. Additional Workshops will be offered during the summer sessions, as well. Days and times will vary each semester. How do I register for the Math Workshop?Students may register for the Workshop in the University College office, which is located in the lower level of the Community & Technical College Building, or mail the registration form and payment to: Marshall University (Please make checks payable to Marshall University. Once the workshop begins, there will be no refunds. The fee for the Workshop - MTH 127 combination is non-refundable.)
