Marshall To Host Regional Math Education Conference

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University will welcome math educators from throughout the Tri-State region to the Huntington campus this weekend for the "Mathematics Teacher Preparation in Appalachia - Mathematics Content" conference. Hosted by the Teacher Education Initiative of the Appalachian Collaborative Center For Learning Assessment And Instruction in Mathematics (ACCLAIM), the conference will be held at campus sites and downtown Huntington's Radisson Hotel.

State mathematics coordinators from West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky will serve on a panel and will lead a discussion of the opportunities and challenges for faculty at the 5-16 grade levels. Four regional faculty members will discuss the reasons and the ways they have modified classes and course materials.

Organizers say the primary goal of the conference is to examine the national, state, and local issues that may influence the mathematics content and mathematics teacher preparation programs. The featured speaker is Zalman Usiskin, who brings a wide range of experiences to his presentation on national issues.

The conference begins Friday, August 8, and concludes Saturday, August 9.
