Q: How do I update Microsoft Office 2000/Office XP?

A: To update your Microsoft Office 2000 product you will need to go to http://office.microsoft.com and click on the Downloads Button on the left side of the screen under the light blue section titled Home.

When the next page comes up you will need to click on Check for Updates Button in the “Office Update” box as seen below.

An Office Update Installation Engine box may appear and ask you to install the product. Read through the information provided in the box then click on the Yes Button to continue the installation process.

When the Update Engine has been installed it will look for any updates that may need to be installed on your computer. When finished searching it will give you a list of updates needed for your computer. This may vary from computer to computer depending on what other updates have or have not already been installed.

Click the Start Installation Button and let the program begin the install process.

An End-User License Agreement dialogue box will appear. Read through the agreement and if you accept the terms click the “I accept the terms of the license agreement” box then click the Next Button to continue.

Another dialogue box will appear and ask you to confirm your selection. If you wish to make any changes follow the instructions in the box. If you are satisfied with your selection click the Next Button to continue.

You may be asked to supply your Microsoft Office installation CDs or a network path during the install process so the installer can locate certain file(s) it needs to complete the update. Click the Next Button and continue the installation.

The installer will now download the selected updates to your computer. The download time may vary depending on how many updates you have to install and your network connection speed. Once the download process is finished it will then start the installation of the updates.

At this point another dialogue box may or may not appear asking you to insert your Microsoft Office installation CD. If this happens it may be because you have installed additional products such as Microsoft Project, Publisher, or Visio on your computer. If you installed any of these products from a CD and have the disk insert it at this point; if the product(s) was installed from the network, an image, or you do not have the installation CD then click on the Browse button. As a reminder, if you are several service packs behind you may have to go through this process more than once. You will need to find the location of the specific application the installer program is trying to update. An example of a Visio Professional 2002 update is shown below.

If you have the installation disk you need to insert the disk into the computer and click on the OK Button to continue.

If the installation disk is not available you will need to locate the Visio.msi file the installer program is looking for.  The location and how to navigate to that location is shown below.

Once you navigate to the appropriate location, you will need to highlight the requested file and then click on the Open button to continue.

When the next dialogue box appears click on the OK button and continue with the installation.

The installer will continue with the updates and when everything is complete a final screen will appear requesting the user to click on the Finish Button. This will complete the update process.

Q. If I have an unsupported application how do I upgrade to a supported version?

A.There are basically two options. It may be possible to simply upgrade the application by inserting the new version CD or from the network share (Service Desk assisted only) and following the instructions. You can do this yourself by checking obtaining the software through the IT front desk check-out. You can also contact the Service Desk at ext. 63200 or servicedesk@marshall.edu. They can assist in the upgrade process. The second option would be to uninstall the current application, and installing a clean version from the CD or network share (Help Desk assisted only).

Q. How do I get help for an unsupported application?

A. By contacting the Service Desk at ext. 3200 or servicedesk@marshall.edu. The rate for support of an unsupported application is $25 per hour. For more information about our rated services, please see
