Q. How can I access university resources from off campus?

A.

• Depending on the resource, there are a variety of options. E-mail can be obtained through the web at http://mymu.marshall.edu for students and http://outlookweb.marshall.edu for faculty and staff.
• The university’s shared database system, Banner, can be accessed via Citrix, which is designed to allow remote access to centrally stored data and applications.
• Shared folders and files can be easily reached through the use of the VPN, which allows users to reach machines, folders and files in the same way they would on campus, without having to use fully qualified machine names or the use of FTP. VPN also allows a better use of the Outlook full client from home, mimicking the network setup of the University’s machines.

Q. What is a VPN?

A. VPN stands for Virtual Private Networking. It acts as a private network while still using public lines. VPN has all the functionality and appearance of a dedicated network connection.

Q. How do I install the VPN client on Windows XP/Vista?

A.
Click here to download instructions on how to install the VPN client. Installing the VPN Client (PDF) You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this document.  Click here to download Adobe Acrobat Reader

Q. I can not install the software.

A. Make sure you are running as a privileged user. In Windows XP/Vista this means you should be administrator or a member of the local administrators group. In Linux/Unix/MacOSX you need to be root to install (but not use) the software.

WINDOWS XP
When I try to install the software under XP, it doesn't finish and I get errors about ikernel.exe and rpc failures
There is a fundamental bug in Windows XP that may prevent the software from fully installing. The fix is to upgrade to Service Pack 1. Here is the announcement from Microsoft. You should un-install the VPN client and install SP1. If you have problems un-installing the incomplete client, see below for instructions on doing a manual un-install.

Q. How do I run the VPN client?

A.

Q. VPN client never seems to connect correctly. (Error: Peer not responding)

A.
Check to make sure you are using TCP based transparent tunneling, which is the default. Settings for this can be found in Options->Properties. Also make sure the port is set to 32611. If that does not work, you can also try port 22.

If you are using a Cisco (not Netlock or Movian) client, disable IPsec pass through or VPN compatibility mode on any Cable or DSL firewall.

If you are running any personal firewall software, temporarily disable it. If this fixes the problem, you will need to adjust your firewall software to allow the VPN traffic through.

Make sure you can ping MU-VPN.Marshall.edu.

WINDOWS XP
Make sure you disable the built in Windows XP firewall. It is not compatible with the Cisco VPN client, and many other pieces of software.

Q. I can not uninstall the software

A. Make sure you are a privileged user. In Windows XP/Vista, you must be administrator, or a user in the administrators group. In Linux/Unix/MacOSX, you must be root.

WINDOWS XP/Vista
Perform a manual un-install with the following guide from Cisco.

LINUX/UNIX/MACOS-X
Perform a manual uninstall according to the following guide from Cisco.

Q. What is a Citrix client?

A. A Citrix client is a third party remote access application which allows users the ability to work remotely on key applications such as Banner 2000.
You can link to this website to download the Citrix client. http://www.marshall.edu/ucs/CS/remote-access/remoteaccess.asp

Q. When would I use a Citrix client?

A. When using the Banner 2000 system, when direct access to the Marshall University network is unavailable, whether working from home or at some of our satellite campuses.
