Marshall University Computing Services provides an e-mail address for the purpose of reporting abuse originating from MUnet resources or by MUnet account holders.

This address should NOT be used by MUnet account holders to report receipt of unsolicited bulk e-mail (Spam). UCS requests that MUnet account holders follow the guidelines provided on the Electronic E-mail resource page http://www.marshall.edu/ucs/systems/email.asp.

Abuse complaints should be addressed to abuse@marshall.edu

Please take a moment to read the abuse reporting instructions below. If your report does NOT contain the REQUIRED INFORMATION as listed below, we will NOT be able to investigate the event and the report will be deleted.

Your e-mail will be forwarded to the Marshall University Computing Services Systems Group for investigation to determine whether an abuse of Marshall University Network (MUnet) services exists. Your e-mail will trigger an auto-reply message that will provide you with a copy of the information on this web page as well as inform you about our current abuse policies and procedures.

Marshall University Computing Services does not allow or condone any violation of our Information Technology Environment Usage and Abuse Policy (available online at http://www.marshall.edu/ucs/CS/accptuse.asp ) and we maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards spam and network abuse of any kind.

Spam Complaints

If you are reporting spam or abusive e-mail, we require the full email header to investigate the complaint. We can only assist with spam that originates from the Marshall University Network (MUnet). If you received spam that did not originate from MUnet, you will have to send your report/complaint to the ISP where the spam originated. When we receive your complaint, we will investigate and take the appropriate action even though we may not send you a personal response.

For more information regarding spam and unsolicited email, go to: http://spam.abuse.net/spam .
For information regarding how to obtain the full email header, go to:
http://spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/19.html .

Hacking Complaints

If you are reporting "hacking" or scans/probes that your firewall is detecting, we need the following information: date, time, time zone, a copy of the log indicating the IP address where the probe originated, and the type of probe/scan.

Virus Complaints

Every effort will be made to notify our account holders if we identify that they are transmitting a computer virus. If you have received a virus via email from an MUnet account holder, you MUST include the message header information from that email to identify the customer (see Spam section above).

If you have received a virus, and it needs to be cleaned, you will need to have commercial anti-virus software on your system with updated definitions.
Please, do not forward a copy of the virus to Marshall University Computing Services.

Harassment Complaints

If you are reporting harassment, please take steps to protect yourself and your property by reporting the harassment to your local law enforcement agency. We will investigate your complaint as quickly as possible and, should the need arise, we will fully cooperate with law enforcement.

Newsgroup Complaints

If you are reporting newsgroup abuse, please be aware that our Acceptable Use Policies allow for up to 6 cross posts as long as the post is "on topic." Additionally, newsgroups are a public forum and we do not get involved with or attempt to mediate "flame wars," "name calling," or other similar disputes.

Thank you for your cooperation.
