A benefit of UHSM is the presentation of awards to outstanding works of high school media, including yearbooks, newspapers, and television programs. Both individual and group awards are presented. Most award categories are subdivided into divisions, each based on school size. Division I schools have fewer than 800 students, while Division II schools have mroe than 800 students. The highest individual award is the Most Promising Student Journalist, which is based on experience, an essay, and work samples. The recipient of this award receives a scholarship to study journalism at Marshall University.
