Marshall University’s speech and debate team, winner of three tournaments this winter, is taking its performance public at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in Smith Hall 154.
“We want to give the people who are interested an idea of what we do,” Coach Danny Ray said. “There will actually be some performances of public speeches and dramatic events, and interpretations of poetry and prose.”
Although admission is free, donations will be accepted at the door. “We want to start a scholarship fund,” Ray said.
Several factors have contributed to the Thundering Word’s phenomenal success this year, he said.
“We have a lot of experience,” Ray said. “And, we have started having camp right before school starts. Every student on the team was there for the camp and they all got started early. Also, the team is bigger. Last year we only had five kids and this year we have more than doubled that number with 14. Plus, we have a coaching staff that has been around.”
Marshall will take part in the state tournament March 7-8.
