Summer interns present research results

The 2014 Summer Research Internship for Minority Students (SRIMS) and WV-Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (WV-INBRE) programs concluded with a research symposium at West Virginia University July 28. The 16 students spent the summer conducting research related to lung cancer, melanoma, cystic fibrosis, prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease, breast cancer, depression, and industrial toxins.  The interns presented their results with posters and discussed their findings individually with students, mentors, and other educators from around West Virginia.

In addition to their research in Marshall’s cutting-edge laboratories, the students had the opportunity to go hiking, have a bowling party, spend the day at Beechfork State Park, and use the climbing and bouldering wall and participate in other activities at the Marshall Recreation Center

SRIMS is funded by the MU Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program, Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and donations to the Marshall University Foundation SRIMS Fund. Participants receive room, board, travel expenses, a stipend and Rec Center memberships.

WV-INBRE is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, and applicants must be a student at a West Virginia university or college.  Marshall—in partnership with researchers at West Virginia University—received the award to help build expertise in biomedical research.
