Herd Bash '09Listen to Herd Bash '09 Promo (0:56)
Watch 2008 Herd Bash recap - Windows Media Video (4:44)
Sept. 29 - This replaces the "What's up at WMUL" entry for this week because for us, this event is bigger than big.
Thursday at 7 p.m., WMUL will be towing a scrapped 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V, similar to the one seen above, in the Marshall Homecoming Parade. It will be deliberately painted in the colors of East Carolina, purple and yellow, so it primes you for what we want to do to it the next day.
Friday from noon to 4 p.m. on Buskirk Field, we're going to smash the living daylights out of that car during the seventh edition of Herd Bash, co-sponsored by WMUL and SAPB. We provide the sledgehammers, the safety goggles, the gloves and obviously the car, so all you have to bring is your anger, your muscles and $1. It's the best therapy for the money. Just in case you forget, it will be on sidewalks all across campus Friday morning...not to mention you'll hear all the bashing.
Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the noon kickoff, we will display our bashed car in the parking lot of the McDonald's right beside Joan C. Edwards Stadium, allowing you the perfect opportunity to show your friends, parents, etc. what you did the day before.
Sept. 24 and 25 - Mr. and Miss Marshall voting - via MyMU
Marshall faculty and students may vote for mister and miss Marshall by going to MY M-U and selecting the e-voter application. You may vote for 2 male candidates and 2 female candidates. The homecoming court will be named in the lobby of the Memorial Student Center at noon on Wednesday, September 30th.
Oct. 1 - Marshall Homecoming parade - 7 p.m.
This year's homecoming parade, “Traditions to Treasure,” is happening on Thursday, October 1st. Join student organizations, WMUL, Marshall cheerleaders, Marching Thunder, Miss West Virginia Marshall University’s own Jessi Pierson, and many more for this phenomenal event. The parade will begin at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena and it ends at the Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Oct. 2 - Mike Birbiglia - 8 p.m. - Veteran's Memorial Field House
The Comedy Central vet will be making a special appearance at Marshall University for his “Medium Man on Campus” college tour. Celebrate homecoming weekend with a fantastic laugh. The comedian will be at the Veterans Memorial Field House at 8 pm on Friday, October 2nd.
Through Oct. 8 - Erika Osbourne exhibit - Birke Art Gallery
Do you enjoy upcoming modern artists? Artist Erika Osborne has been published in national art magazines such as Art Papers, Sculpture Magazine, and Southwest Art magazine. Check out her astonishing work anytime during the Birke Art Gallery’s operating hours.

Sept. 22 - Promotions is taking a break this week in preparation of our seventh straight car bash next Friday, but the sports department is more than making up for it.
Wednesday, the Battle for the Golden Ball hits the Cam as WVU and Marshall go at it in volleyball. It's the only MU-WVU game taking place in Huntington this year. Pregame begins at 6:45 p.m.
Friday starts the first of two Women's Soccer/Volleyball doubleheaders this weekend. Volleyball takes on Southern Miss at 7 p.m., and women's soccer takes on Houston at 8 p.m..
Saturday, find out how much our football crew enjoyed the Memphis lifestyle while they call the Marshall-Memphis football game. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., but we go live from the Liberty Bowl starting at noon.
Sunday is the other Women's Soccer/Volleyball doubleheader. Women's soccer takes on Rice at noon on Stream 1, while volleyball battles UCF at 2 p.m. on Stream 2.
Sept. 15 - We're doing mostly internal work this week, as the Fall schedule just started Monday morning at 6. But we still have a couple of things we're doing out and about.
Thursday at 11:30 a.m. on Buskirk Field, cheer on WMULers Ryan Epling and James Roach during the President's Invitational Quoits Media Challenge. They and other local celebrities will take on President Stephen Kopp in what is always both a competitive and fun event. (Photo from our newspaper friends at The Parthenon.)
Starting bright and early at 9 a.m., WMUL will be setting up for the first open house of the season, now officially called Green and White Days. We'll be right alongside the Journalism school setup on the first floor of the Communications Building.
Later on Saturday, we'll broadcast a Marshall sports doubleheader, with coverage of Herd Volleyball at the Cam starting at 12:45 and Herd Football at the Joan starting at 5.
Sept. 7 - We're laying low this Labor Day, because the next few days are going to be mega hectic for us.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 3:30, WMUL will have its new and veteran staff signup meetings up in Drinko Library 402. Tuesday will be for veterans only, while Wednesday and Thursday will be for everyone.
Also on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m to 3 p.m, we will be at the Student Organization Fair on the Student Center Plaza--or inside the Student Center if it rains.
Thursday from 8-9 p.m., Snob-Rock Live returns to WMUL after a one-year hiatus with an interview with Ben Kweller.
Friday, we will hold our mandatory staff training sessions in the WMUL Staff Room (map). Stop by anytime between 1 and 5 p.m., and it will take less than 20 minutes to familiarize you with our setup. All the heavy training happens during your first shift.
Also on Friday, we will release our regular Fall schedule. A few of the shifts will appear unfilled, but we always get shift confirmations through the weekend. If you are still seeking an airshift, your best bet would be to check if those times remain unfilled early next week.
Saturday, we'll be in Blacksburg to broadcast Marshall football taking on Top-15 team Virginia Tech. Our coverage begins at 11:30 a.m.
And finally on Sunday, listen to WMUL as the undefeated, not-scored-upon MU Women's Soccer team will take on Ohio at Sam Hood Field. Coverage begins at 12:45 p.m.
Sept. 1 - It's less than two weeks now to the start of our full Fall schedule. We can't wait.
Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., WMUL will man a table and play music on the fountain side of the Memorial Student Center underneath the awning. Get tons of cool swag, sign up to be a station volunteer, or simply learn about your college radio station.
Aug. 24 - It's pretty light at WMUL this week. We're still recovering from the awesomeness that was Welcome Weekend. But next week...that's a different story, my friend.
Tuesday from 7:15 to 8 p.m. over in the FYRH lobby, catch Music Director Jessie Kirk and the WMUL promotions staff "Dancin' in the Dorms". Think of it as a 45-minute break from all the madness. You know you deserve it.
Aug. 21 - Here is a quick little photo gallery from WMUL's big Friday at the Welcome Weekend Picnic. Click image for larger photo.
Aug. 17 - Forget Monday...WMUL's semester starts this weekend!
Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., learn more about our award-winning station at the Welcome Weekend Picnic at Buskirk Field. If you met us at orientation, this is the perfect time to check back in.
Also on Friday from 7-10 p.m., WMUL DJ duo "Rudebuoyz" will blast the Tri-State's only rhythm and reggae from outside the Rec Center.
Then on Saturday, in between music sets at the inaugural Recfest, catch the Rudebuoyz again all day long.
Sunday at 1 p.m., our coverage of "Soccer In The Hood" returns with the season opener for women's soccer against Cleveland State over at Sam Hood Field. As always, listen on 88.1 in town or online anywhere.
And again--this is all before the semester starts on the 24th.
"Hair from the Herd 2009" shatters last year's donation total May 1 - The Huntington School of Beauty Culture cut enough hair Apr. 23 to stretch six stories. The official number is 690 inches, or a whopping 57.5 feet, and that number excludes hair not bound into a ponytail.
More than 40 people donated their hair this year, including WMUL operations manager Mike Stanley and WMUL news anchor Neera Doss. An outside reporter covering the event also cut her hair after doing her newsgathering duties. Every participant received a Hair from the Herd T-shirt, as well as a cool-looking WMUL drawstring shoebag that included various goodies.
This was the second year for the event. Last year, more than 20 people donated more than 400 inches of hair to the worldwide organization Locks of Love, who makes wigs for children undergoing chemotherapy and other hair-losing procedures. WMUL would like to thank everyone involved in making this year even better than last.
