Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Program at Marshall University!
Whether you are interested in earning a Ph.D. or research Master’s in Biomedical Sciences, or bridging to medical school with our Medical Sciences area of emphasis, this website will help show you how your time in the Marshall University Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program will prepare you for success in your chosen field.
Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences (Ph.D.)
In addition to developing a broad base in the biomedical sciences, each student in the Ph.D. program receives special in-depth training in one of the following research areas of emphasis (Research Clusters): Cancer Biology; Cardiovascular Disease, Obesity, and Diabetes; Infectious and Immunological Diseases; Neuroscience and Developmental Biology; and Toxicology and Environmental Health Sciences. These areas are designed to be interdisciplinary, flexible and research-driven.
M.D./Ph.D. Combined Degree Program
The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine has historically offered an option for students who wish to obtain both the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees. It is anticipated that two new M.D./Ph.D. candidates will be admitted each academic year.
Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences (M.S., Research option)
Students in the Master of Science Degree program also choose to specialize in one of five Research Clusters.
Generally, completion of the requirements of this program takes about three years.
Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences, Medical Sciences Emphasis (M.S., Non-Thesis)
The BMS Program offers a non-thesis Master of Science degree in a medical sciences area of emphasis to improve the science foundation of students seeking admission into doctoral programs. This area of emphasis is also for students wishing to pursue non-research careers in the health professions or in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
STEM Graduate Programs
The Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program is a one of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Graduate Programs at Marshall University.
