Tax Benefits for Higher Education

The American Opportunity (formerly Hope) and Lifetime Learning tax credits that may be available to you if you pay higher education costs. To assist you in claiming these credits, Marshall University will file form 1098-T with the Internal Revenue Service by January 31 each year.  This information in no way represents tax advice from the University, as it is  the responsibility of the taxpayer to determine eligibility for the credit.  Please do not contact Marshall University regarding your eligibility for this credit.

To obtain more information on the American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning tax credits, please refer to IRS Publication 970 – Tax Benefits for Higher Education or contact the Internal Revenue Service directly at 1-800-829-1040.  For specific questions concerning information provided within your 1098-T please contact Marshall University at 1-800-438-5389.

To obtain a copy of your 1098-T form:

Marshall University will mail the 1098-T forms by January 31st each year.  If you did not receive your copy or need an additional copy, simply complete the following steps.(please note that the 1098-T will contain ONLY transactions occurring from January 1 – December 31 in the given tax year):

1.    Click here to access the myMU login page.

2.    Log in with your student ID number and PIN number.  Unless changed by the student the PIN number is the student birthdate (MMDDYY).

3.    Under Academic Services click the “Click here to” link

4.    Click on the link beneath “MILO”

5.    Select “Student & Financial Aid Information “

6.    Select “Payment and Account Information”

7.    Select “Tax Notification”

8.    Enter the Tax Year

You may then print the form from your web browser to assist you in your tax preparation.
