The Department of Family and Community Health in the School of Medicine is responsible for teaching the Medical Spanish elective course. Beginning 2011-2012, the course began to integrate more native-Spanish speakers into the guest lecturer component of the course. All medical students are now able to count the two-hour credit of this course toward their 22-hour elective requirement which was offered only for 4th-year medical students previously. In addition to learning basic Medical Spanish for the purpose of interacting with Spanish-speaking patients, cultural competencies are integrated into every hour of the course.
