MU Foundation Hall: Jefferson County, WV is a picturesque land known to most for its scenic Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and historic events, such as John Brown’s Raid at Harpers Ferry. This small, agricultural county nestled in the Shenandoah Valley also has an unusually well preserved collection of historic houses. Architectural historian, John Allen, documented these unique homes in his book, Uncommon Vernacular: The Early Houses of Jefferson County, West Virginia, 1735-1835 (West Virginia University Press). In this lecture, Allen will examine the findings of his comprehensive seven-year survey of this area’s historic residences.
