Leadership Specialist area in the Master of Arts in Leadership Studies

General Description

This Master of Arts degree program is designed for persons working in non-profit and government agencies. The coursework covers a range of leadership topics and has elective opportunities for students to tailor the program to more specifically meet their career needs. Many members of our military services are enrolled in this program.

Admission Requirements

A student who desires admission to the online M.A. program in Leadership Studies must have an undergraduate degree with a Grade Point Average (UGPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale from a regionally accredited institution. Transcripts from the student’s undergraduate institution(s) must be provided at the time of application. Students who do not meet the UGPA requirement may be admitted provisionally, with limited course enrollment, subject to the departmental procedure for such admissions.

Q. Does this degree lead to school licensure?
A. No. This degree program is designed for persons that are working in, or seeking, management positions in non-profit or government agencies.

Q. How long does it take to complete the program?
A. How long it takes depends on how many courses you want to take per term. Most of our students are employed full time and choose to complete two courses per semester, Fall, Spring, & Summer. The full program is 30 hours, 10 courses. Courses are offered on a rotating schedule so every course may not be available in every term.

Q. How long does a course last and when do classes begin and end each semester?
A. The duration for a course varies slightly by semester. Fall and Spring terms are 15 weeks and the Summer Term I lasts 12 weeks. The academic calendar can be found at http://www.marshall.edu/calendar/academic/.

Q. How much is out- of-state tuition?
A. Tuition for online courses is the same for in-state and out-of-state students. Select the link for online courses on the Bursar’s Office Tuition and Fees page for details.

Through this experience, the faculty has developed unmatched expertise in designing and teaching online courses. Leadership Studies online courses are not taught using a “read-quiz-move on” method, but in an interactive fashion with the learner as the focus. The application of knowledge in real-world settings is the objective of every course.

Middle Childhood Education Internet-Based Graduate Program

General Description

The Graduate School of Education and Professional Development offers five graduate courses leading to a Middle Childhood (MC) endorsement to a general education teaching certificate. This program has been approved by the WVDOE for preparation leading to the MC endorsement. These courses are applicable for use toward a degree program.

Middle Childhood Education may be completed as a stand-alone graduate certificate or as an area of emphasis within the Master of Arts in Elementary Education or Master of Arts in Secondary Education.

Completion of either the certificate or degree related to Middle Childhood Education may lead to additional endorsement for those who have a general teaching license in West Virginia and content area specialization. To gain the teaching license endorsement in West Virginia, participants are required to take and pass the PLT 0623 – Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 5-9.

Upon completion of all courses and passing the Praxis test, participants will be eligible to request the additional endorsement from the West Virginia Department of Education. Participants wishing licensure in other states are responsible for ascertaining the relevant requirements and the probability of this program meeting those requirements.

Students must be admitted to Marshall University prior to enrollment.

 

Endorsement Requirements

Recommendation for endorsement in middle childhood education requires all of the following:

  1. Completion of the 12-hour graduate program.
  2. Candidates must hold a general education teaching certificate
  3. Attaining a passing score on the PRAXIS II, Principles of Learning and Teaching (5-9).

The endorsement to the general education teaching certificate will indicate that the teacher has special professional education training for teaching middle childhood learners. The endorsement alone does not allow one to teach subject areas in the middle schools. If a teacher holds a content endorsement in grades 7-12, this endorsement will allow that teacher to teach their subject area down through 5th grade. If a teacher holds a middle school content area, this endorsement only enhances their middle childhood knowledge, it does not allow them to teach subject areas other than those indicated on their teaching certificate. This endorsement does not allow elementary teachers to teach subject areas in the middle schools. The endorsement for those completing this program will read as follows: Middle Childhood—Grades 5-9.

Mathematics Through Algebra I

General Description:

Mathematics through Algebra I may be completed as a stand-alone graduate certificate or as an area of emphasis within the Master of Arts in Elementary Education or Master of Arts in Secondary Education. Mathematics through Algebra I has been accredited by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Completion of either the certificate or degree related to Mathematics through Algebra I may lead to additional endorsement by the same name for those who have a general teaching license in West Virginia. The program is designed for teachers who hold a valid general teaching license in an area other than mathematics and who have an interest in expanding their license to this area. Upon completion of the program, participants may be eligible to teach mathematics through Algebra I at the 5-9 or 5-Adult programmatic levels, depending upon previous experience, license, and options selected within the program, and the passing of the PRAXIS II Middle Level Mathematics exam.

To gain the teaching license endorsement in West Virginia, participants are required to take and pass the Praxis II Middle Level Mathematics exam. Upon completion of all courses and passing the Praxis test, participants will be eligible to request the additional endorsement of Mathematics through Algebra I at grade levels 5-9 or 5-Adult from the West Virginia Department of Education.   • A test score from either the Miller Analogies Test (scaled score of 387 or higher) or Graduate Record Exam (combined score of 800 on verbal and quantitative sections). The MAT or GRE is only required for those candidates applying towards a master’s degree.

Master of Arts in Education with an Emphasis in School Library Media

General Description:

This area of emphasis is designed to prepare school library media specialists to function in an information-rich learning environment and to provide leadership in information literacy and development of research skills. The seven core courses cover library administration, selection and management of resources and instructional practices. The final course, Library Practice, allows students to apply program competencies in actual school libraries.

ITL 501 Libraries & the Learning Process
A study of the role of the school library in the instruction and learning process with focus is on the implementation of learning objectives through direct instruction, collaboration with teachers, and curriculum support.

ITL 502 Library Materials for Adolescents
Course addresses the selection and promotion of library materials for adolescents in support of a school curriculum and issues of diversity and balance in the school library collection.

ITL 515 Reference & Bibliography
Study of the basic reference sources for elementary and secondary school libraries. Emphasis is on material selection, the reference interview, search strategies, and the impact of new technologies.

ITL 622 Cataloging & Classification
Fundamentals of cataloging and classification, applying AACR2, the Dewey Decimal system, and related aids to the organization of library materials will be covered as well as implications of new technology for technical services.

ITL 625 Library Organization & Administration
Principals of administration for school library media centers, including planning, budgeting, collection development and access, and program evaluation are addressed.

ITL 631 Technology & the Library
Course provides an introduction to the function and management of technology, application of computer technology to library tasks and technology as an education tool.

CIRG 613 Children’s Literature
An examination of teaching methods and of children’s literature that are conductive to promoting permanent interest and skills in reading.

ITL 650 Library Practice
Experience in the application of techniques of library service, adapted as far as possible to the student’s needs. This course must be taken after all other program courses have been completed.

Note: Students have other options for completing course requirements. For example, EDF 625 Qualitative Research in Education can be taken instead of EDF 621. However, courses listed above are those that are entirely online. Other options are traditional classroom courses or WebCT courses with several on-campus meetings. Certification Reciprocity: Certification is awarded by the state of West Virginia. This certification is currently reciprocated by most states. It is important that students outside of West Virginia confirm with their state certification office that Marshall’s program will be accepted or discuss the situation with Dr. Seymour, program coordinator.
