Through this experience, the faculty has developed unmatched expertise in designing and teaching online courses. The application of knowledge in real-world settings is the objective of every course.

Middle Childhood Education Internet-Based Graduate Program

General Description

The Graduate School of Education and Professional Development offers five graduate courses leading to a Middle Childhood (MC) endorsement to a general education teaching certificate. This program has been approved by the WVDOE for preparation leading to the MC endorsement. These courses are applicable for use toward a degree program.

Middle Childhood Education may be completed as a stand-alone graduate certificate or as an area of emphasis within the Master of Arts in Elementary Education or Master of Arts in Secondary Education.

Completion of either the certificate or degree related to Middle Childhood Education may lead to additional endorsement for those who have a general teaching license in West Virginia and content area specialization. To gain the teaching license endorsement in West Virginia, participants are required to take and pass the PLT 0623 – Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 5-9.

Upon completion of all courses and passing the Praxis test, participants will be eligible to request the additional endorsement from the West Virginia Department of Education. Participants wishing licensure in other states are responsible for ascertaining the relevant requirements and the probability of this program meeting those requirements.

Students must be admitted to Marshall University prior to enrollment.

Endorsement Requirements

Recommendation for endorsement in middle childhood education requires all of the following:

  1. Completion of the 12-hour graduate program.
  2. Candidates must hold a general education teaching certificate
  3. Attaining a passing score on the PRAXIS II, Principles of Learning and Teaching (5-9).

The endorsement to the general education teaching certificate will indicate that the teacher has special professional education training for teaching middle childhood learners. The endorsement alone does not allow one to teach subject areas in the middle schools. If a teacher holds a content endorsement in grades 7-12, this endorsement will allow that teacher to teach their subject area down through 5th grade. If a teacher holds a middle school content area, this endorsement only enhances their middle childhood knowledge, it does not allow them to teach subject areas other than those indicated on their teaching certificate. This endorsement does not allow elementary teachers to teach subject areas in the middle schools. The endorsement for those completing this program will read as follows: Middle Childhood—Grades 5-9.

For some reason the system won’t let me register?

If you are unable to register during your assigned registration window, that may mean that a hold has been placed on your record. Holds are placed for a number of reasons including academic deficiencies, student status, incomplete admissions documents, an outstanding financial obligation, or if a student has not met the prerequisites for the course they want to take.

For assistance in this area, please call Ms. Crystal Stewart in the Office of Distributed Education, M-F, 8:30am-4:30pm at 304-696-2970.

Is a Marshall University Online course easier to take than a face-to-face course?

While the learning and delivery methods are different, the course content offered in an online course is the same. Depending on the course type, you might focus more on reading and writing rather than listening and observing. Keep in mind that online courses are college-level courses which offer a different way of learning. These courses require self-discipline and motivation. Some students enjoy the flexibility of online courses and the experience of independent learning. Online courses definitely require focus, discipline and determination, but the benefits of successfully taking and completing courses online are great.

How do I get my textbooks?

Textbooks are available at the Marshall University Bookstore located in the Memorial Student Center on the Marshall campus. You can order books online at the bookstore’s web site or via telephone: (304) 696-3622. For your convenience, the bookstore web site lists required textbooks by semester and course. You will be prompted to select the appropriate course number and section number to view the list of required textbooks for your course.

Textbooks for many graduate courses are also available at the bookstore located on the South Charleston campus of the Marshall University Graduate College. Books can be acquired there in person or by telephone at 1-800-642-9842 ext. 2501.

Please Note:
Textbooks are available far in advance of the course start date. Check the bookstore links for textbook availability.

What times do MUOnLine classes meet?

If a MUOnLine course is listed in the course schedule as offering no live meetings, there will be no live class meeting times.

When you login is up to you, but we advise that you keep in mind your course due dates and deadlines for assignments and exams in your course. Since you do all of your course work and discussion activities at your own pace (again keeping in mind deadlines for assignments/exams), in a course delivered 100 percent over the Internet, and with no live meetings, you have a lot of flexibility as to “when” you actually do your work.
