Diversity
he
next generation of Marshall University students will live in a multi-cultural
world. Established trends will accelerate and global economic forces
shaped by instantaneous world-wide communication systems will make
international encounters routine. Demographers predict the population
will become even more diverse, with today’s “minority” groups collectively
constituting nearly one half of the national population by the mid-point
of the next century. Marshall University must include programs that
prepare its students for a changing world. Specifically:
- Marshall should expand opportunities for
international education by
- Expanding the population of international
students who attend Marshall University.
- Increasing the number of international
faculty members at Marshall.
- Expanding opportunities for Marshall
students to travel and study abroad.
- Continuing to expand the international
dimension of the curriculum by refining existing programs
and developing new courses of study.
- In its personnel and curriculum, Marshall
University should reflect the growing diversity of the nation
by
- Increasing the population of students,
faculty and staff from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
- Continued development of academic and
other programs that foster an affirmation of gender issues,
intercultural understanding and tolerance.
- The development of partnerships with
public and private groups that will expand the range of multicultural
opportunities available to the university,
- Renewed commitment to equal employment
opportunity and to equal access to academic and other programs.
