Marshall made its claim as the best NCAA Division I-AA program ever
as it rolled to a 15-0 record and second national championship. Entering
the 1996 football season there was more anticipation and higher
expectations than ever before at Marshall.
Bob Pruett, previously the defensive coordinator at Florida, returned to his alma mater to head up a Marshall program that had been picked by most to with the national championship.
The 1996 team returned almost all of its starters from a team that advanced to the championship game the previous year. Also entering the picture this season were a host of transfers including Florida quarterback Eric Kresser and Florida State wide receiver Randy Moss.
Game 1: Howard University
Marshall started the season with a challenge as it faced the Howard Bison, a team the Herd defeated in the first round of the 1993 playoffs. After the teams traded field goals, Kresser passed the ball to Moss for the first time. The result ... a 26-yard touchdown. The Herd trailed part of the first half but managed a slim 24-20 halftime advantage. Early in the third quarter, Tim Openlander booted a personal-best and Marshall Stadium record 52-yard field goal. It proved to be a boost for Marshall, which outscored the Bison 31-7 in the second half. On Howard's next possession, Rogers Beckett blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown. Erik Thomas, who was named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, rushed for 173 yards and a touchdown as the Herd beat the Bison, 55-27.
Game 2: West Virginia State
In the second week, Marshall faced West Virginia State, coached by former Marshall great and NFL all-pro, Carl Lee. Herd fans got their first real glimpse of Randy Moss who caught three touchdown passes in the first half. Mark Zban, who was starting for the injured Kresser, was 15-of-18 through the air for three touchdowns. The Herd cruised to a 42-7 win.
