
Game 3: Georgia Southern
Marshall opened the Southern Conference portion of its season in the
third week as it traveled to play at Georgia Southern. The Herd jumped out
to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter as Openlander booted a 26-yard field
goal. Six minutes later, Kresser connected with
Moss for a 42-yard
touchdown completion, making the score 10-0. The teams traded touchdowns
in the second quarter, which left Marshall with a 17-7 halftime edge. The
Eagles recovered a fumble in the end zone in the third quarter to make the
score 17-13. However, Marshall pulled away with a touchdown run by Doug
Chapman and TD reception by converted offensive lineman Jason Wellman to
make the final score 29-13.
Game 4: Western Kentucky University
Marshall returned home for its fourth game against Western Kentucky,
which had a perfect 4-0 record and No. 12 ranking in the Division I-AA
poll.
With Indianapolis Colts' quarterback Jim Harbaugh on the sidelines as an
assistant coach for his father's WKU squad, Marshall jumped out to a 7-0
lead as Moss caught a three-yard touchdown pass on the Herd's first possession.
Openlander's chip shot field goal gave Marshall a 10-0 lead at the end of
the first quarter. After a WKU field goal, Chapman rushed 19 yards for a
touchdown giving the Herd a 17-3 halftime lead. Openlander connected on
two more field goals in the third quarter to push the lead up to 23-3. Mark
Wicks and Llow Turner both scored touchdowns in the fourth quarter to give
Marshall the 37-3 win. Larry McCloud recorded a career-high 18 tackles,
including 12 solo.

Game 5: The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
The Herd got back into its conference schedule with a 45-0 drubbing of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Erik Thomas, Moss, Wellman and Chapman each had touchdowns in the first half to pace the Herd to a 31-0 halftime lead. Turner, who had 94 yards rushing on the day, scored two second-half touchdowns.
