Athletics, arts, education, service, leadership, and
unity are the foundations of Greek life.
Each
year Marshall Greeks unite to display these founding principles on campus
during Greek Week.
Greek Week is organized by a chairperson from the Panhellenic and Interfraternity Councils and a delegate from each fraternity and sorority. The committee began meeting in February to prepare for the events.
Travis Samson, IFC Greek Week chairman said there have been new events included in the week. "Some things have changed this year," he said. "This is the first time we have had a Faculty breakfast." The breakfast has been organized to express appreciation to all faculty and staff members.

Allison Swick, Greek adviser, said another event that has
changed since last year is the awards ceremony. "Not only will the
ceremony be more formal, but will include the IFC and PHC Chapter of
Excellence awards," Swick said. The Chapter of Excellence
awards include Outstanding Public Relations, Service and Philanthropy, New
Member
Education, Recruitment, Alumni Relations,
and Best Overall Chapter.
There are a few other additions to this year's Greek Week. These include kickball in place of softball, and a ping pong competition.
"A service project with the Salvation Army has been scheduled for Friday," Samson said. He said Dave Westol, Executive Director of Theta Chi Fraternity, will speak Friday about risk management issues, such as alcohol and hazing.
Greek Week is the birth of champions, but also a rebirth
of unforgettable moments.
In a poll conducted by the Office of Greek Affairs, students rated the unity of all chapters, Greek Sing, participating in events, Saturday game day and the picnic as their favorite parts of Greek Week.
Chris Layne, Alpha Sigma Phi, said his favorite part about
last year's Greek Week was
Greek Sing, "because
we won and it brought everyone together . "
Alpha Xi Delta member Gina Chaber said her favorite
event last year was the basketball tournament. "Greek Week is a blast,"
she said. "Greeks and non-Greeks should come and watch."
Although softball was Delta Zeta Stephanie Lemasters' favorite event last year , she said kickball will be a fun change because "It's different and gets others involved."
Christine Boggs of Sigma Sigma Sigma enjoys the chalk drawing competition. "My favorite Greek Week event is the chalk drawing. It's usually a beautiful day and everyone is out and about. I like it because everyone on the plaza stops to take notice," she said.
The most common response regarding the excitement of Greek
Week was the unity among chapters. "We need to have the unity of Greek
Week more
often," Lemasters said.
Layne summed up why he believes Greek Week is such
a popular event among Greeks by saying, "It gathers all the fraternities
and sororities together for a common purpose, whether it be friendly competition
or community service."
Although each Greek has a different recollection of Greek Weeks past, one thing's for sure - as the tradition continues, so will the memories.
Overall winners for Greek Week '97 were: 1st Place Delta Zeta Sorority and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity; 2nd Place Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and Theta Chi Fraternity; 3rd Place Phi Mu Sorority and Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity
