Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is a predominantly African-American fraternity whose fundamental purpose is achivevment. It seeks to train its membership, particularly undergraduates, for leadership roles in their respective communities and the attainment of a high degree of excellence in their academic pursuits.

Early in this century, black students were actively dissuaded from attending college. Formidable obstacles were erected to prevent the few who enrolled from assimilating into the cocurricular campus life. This social ostracism was characterized at the campus of Indiana University. On January 5, 1911, Elder W. Diggs and Byron K. Armstrong joined eight black students from the University to form Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, which remains the only Greek letter organization with its Alpha Chapter on the University's campus. The Founders sought a formula that would immediately raise the sights of black collegians and stimulate them to accomplishments higher than they might have imagined. Fashioning achievement as its purpose, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting college men of culture, patriotism and honor in a bond of fraternity. Chapters spread in succession to the University of Illinois, the University of Iowa, and Wilberforce University campuses. By 1919, Kappa Alpha Psi activity had generated serious interest among black college degree holders to form Alumni Chapters.

Annually more than 1,800 members are initiated in Kappa Alpha Psi. Undergraduate Chapters are located on more than 354 College and University campuses and Alumni Chapters are arrayed in some 334 cities in the United States and in five foreign countries. Kappa Alpha Psi's vision is to be the nation's preeminent fraternity, comprised of a cadre of high achievers and leaders, working to advance the social, civic, and economic well-being of their communities, especially the African-American community. Scholarships and project funding are provided by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and its philanthropic arm, the Kappa Alpha Psi Foundation, a 501(c)(3) corporation.

Membership is conferred by initiation only. Therefore, strict rules and regulation regarding "membership intake and the initiates' rights" have been set up to enforce our no hazing policy.
