Our mission at the Newman is to provide an atmosphere in which members
of all denominations will be comfortable in
sharing their beliefs.
The Newman Center provides a place on campus where students can go to just
get away; to have fun, watch TV, or study.
Throughout the last year we have held three mini-retreats. These retreats are held on Friday evenings and students are welcome to stay the night and have breakfast the next morning. We discuss such topics as: "Why do the things we do?", "De-stressing in spirit, soul and body.", and"Sin and Forgiveness". These topics are chosen by the students. In certain cases students research the topics and with some guidance from Father Bill Petro conduct the retreat.
We also participated in three larger retreats in the past year.
The first retreat was the beach retreat in May after finals. At this retreat
we discussed fellowship, sacraments, and prayer among other things plus
we had a GREAT TIME! The second was at Camp Virgil Tate and our topic was
"Why am I Afraid to Love?" The third was "Bread for the Journey"
which is put on by a group of people in Wheeling. This is an opportunity
to meet other people from all over West Virginia and get to know the people
in your own group better too. We discussed life decisions for college students
such as college, occupation, marriage and all the transitions one goes through.
We also do things with the community, and faculty
and staff that
attend the Newman Center. Each September a Sunday is chosen and we celebrate
mass at Ritter park with a picnic and games afterward. In February we have
a community retreat which is conducted by community members for everyone;
this years topic was "The 7 Habit of Highly Effective Catholics."
