The Newman Association, which is open to all college students, has weekly
meetings on Wednesday from 9:15 to 10:30. This is the group which participates
in most of the previously mentioned retreats. During some of these meetings
we have preplanned topics other times Father Bill will ask if there is anything
in particular that we want to talk about. On some of these preplanned occasions
we have had speakers such as: Bill Alexander who discussed "Religion
& Technology", Gene and Coni Anthony who spoke about their experiences
and "Marrying Well", thirdly was Bill Heaberlin who talked about
"Being a Christian in the Business World."
The Newman Center also invites students to plan Halloween and
Christmas parties at the center so students have a safe place to celebrate
with friends. We also take money for parking at lot F during the football
season. Father Bill brings a grill, soda and chips and we tailgate and take
turns throwing the frisbee and football while others cook and take money.
There is also a graduate/post graduate group called Anawim. Anawim comes
from the writings of the prophets in the Old Testament and means "those
who in their searching come to a clearer sense
of direction for their
lives". This group started back up in September of '96 and is still
growing. We meet every Friday at 7:30 p.m. In December we organized a group
and went to the state hospital to put on a Christmas party for some of the
people there. We sang carols, shared some scriptures, and had snacks.
Some other things that are offered at the Newman Center are RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), Confirmation and Baptism. Every Thursday students volunteer to fix a meal purchased by Newman and we call it Dinner for A Dollar; it's a homemade meal for $1 that's hard to beat. There is also the Adopt-A-Student program, music ministry, Eucharistic ministry, lecturing and liturgy. Liturgy is every Sunday at 10:15 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.
