Theta Chi Fraternity

A glorious past is ever telling

On February 19, 1997, the Marshall University Interest Group of Theta Chi International Fraternity was formed on campus. Jon Smith and Sam Passer, two expansion coordinators from the international headquarters, were sent to Marshall to form this elite group. It is hoped that this group will become the Iota Alpha colony, the start of a new series, and a somewhat prestigious claim. Only three people attended the first meeting, but this number increased to twelve during the following weeks. Many members were brought in by letters and calls from Sam and Jon, as well as by friends.

While here, Sam appointed officers and committee chairmen, but these were soon rearranged due to extenuating circumstances. The ten remaining members are the founding fathers of Theta Chi at Marshall. Jacob Comer was selected as the first President of the fraternity, and Scott Milam was chosen for Vice-president. J. S. Bragg was named the first Secretary and Historian. Jeremy Rhodes was appointed Rush Chair and Public Relations Director. Bryan Casto was selected as Marshal. The Marshal's responsibility is to keep the members educated and in line. Jeremy Bondurant was named Standards Board Chair, and Ralph Holbrook is Activities Chair. Teddy Claypool was named the IFC delegate. The Treasurer position remains vacant.

Theta Chi is a very diverse group, and it thrives on this diversity. All of the members are distinctly different. This is one of Theta Chi's strongest attributes, and something that is very important to the organization. "We have a history of diversity," Sam Passer said while here. "We try to keep our groups as diverse as possible."

The purpose of Theta Chi at Marshall University is to bring together a group of leaders that will grow and build a strong fraternity. The standards that the group has adopted are among the highest in the Greek system. The ten hour community service requirement and the group grade point average standards are extremely competitive among the other chapters on campus. The group's main focus is on academics and community service, but another major goal is to bring the individual Greek organizations together at Marshall to form a strong Greek system.

In its first semester, the Interest Group made many accomplishments, including a second-place overall finish in Greek Week competition. It has also assisted with many community and university projects.

A glorious past is ever telling

Of friendships that will never die

Within us peace and union dwelling

While honor crowns the Theta Chi
