| Gamma Beta Phi held its 2nd annual Faculty Appreciation Brunch March
30. This event was created to recognize the outstanding faculty of Marshall
University and thank them for their excellent teaching abilities and methods.
Each teacher invited to the brunch was nominated by at least one member of Gamma Beta Phi for the "Professor of the Year Award." It was up to the individual member to determine the criteria for his/her nomination. Dr. Dee Cockrille, Gamma Beta Phi Adviser, gave the welcome to begin the event. Mike Kasey, president of Gamma Beta Phi, then gave the background of the organization. Next, Dr. Sarah Denman spoke as the guest speaker. The time finally arrived for Cockrille to introduce the nominated professors, then Kasey announced the winners. The Gamma Beta Phi "Professors of the Year" were Ronald Gain, Biological Sciences; James Joy, Biological Sciences; Simon Perry, Political Science and Nicola Orsini, Physics and Physical Science. Despite the fact that this was only the 2nd annual Faculty Appreciation Brunch, this was the third year they have given the Professor of the Year Award. In 1998, Susan T. Ferrell, Teacher Education, won. The award went to Susan Weaver, Sociology/Anthropology, in 1999. Cockrille then gave the final remarks to end the brunch. "Scholarship," "Service" and "Character" represent the ideals and purposes of the Gamma Beta Phi Society. The objectives of Gamma Beta Phi are to recognize and encourage excellence in education, promote the development of leadership ability and character in its members, and foster, disseminate and improve education through appropriate service projects.
