Recreational sports offered activities

Those who looked for a way to spend free time this year, may have turned to recreational sports for the answer.

The Department of Recreational Sports and Fitness Activities sponsored events throughout both semesters.

The biggest activity, the President's Cup, is a competition consisting of divisions for fraternities, women, residence halls and an open division for anyone.

Each fall, teams begin competing in sports such as softball, volleyball and basketball. Points for each team are tallied at the end of the semester and added to points earned when competition resumes the following semester. The team with the highest point total for the year is awarded the President's Cup at the beginning of the next school year.

Although the competition is ongoing and scores are carried over from the fall semester, Sharon Stanton, assistant director of intramural sports and fitness, said new teams are still accepted in the spring.

"We encourage everyone to join," Stanton said. "Just because you participate in the activities doesn't mean that you have to compete for the President's Cup. If you're interested in joining, just stop by and pick up a schedule of events."

Other activities for the spring semester included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament sponsored by Follet, and the West Virginia State Racquetball Tournament.

For those who looked for something to do but weren't interested in team sports or competition, individual activities were offered.

The Henderson Center pool, racquetball courts and the fitness center are all available to students, faculty and staff. Aerobics classes of various levels are also open for participation.
